Town of Derry, NH – Virtualization for improved scalability and application integration

The Town of Derry, NH engaged Broadleaf to deliver an upgraded server virtualization and storage solution. Broadleaf used its proven engagement process to enable this town government to improve application availability and manageability of servers and applications. The Town of Derry realized better scalability from the new storage system, better integration with their applications and faster recovery from any intra-day data losses or corruption. The Town of Derry joins a growing list of organizations enlisting Broadleaf for cost-effective strategies for server and storage virtualization as well as replication, business continuity and disaster recovery.

The Town of Derry’s population now is about 5 times larger than it was in 1963, when Interstate 93 first opened in the area. With this increased growth, the local government has worked hard to continually provide for the needs that come with growth. In keeping with that goal, the IT organization for the town recognized the importance of having an infrastructure that could grow with the town, integrate well with their applications and reduce downtime in the event of server loss or onsite data loss. Working with Broadleaf, a solution was designed and implemented using industry leading server virtualization to replace a different platform that was no longer available or supported since that company had been acquired by Oracle.

To integrate with the new server virtualization platform, the Town also moved from tier two storage to an enterprise class storage solution that scales easily, handles files shares and their virtualization environment in one unit, and provides snapshots for near instantaneous restores of intraday data losses. The Derry IT organization is working further with Broadleaf now to implement enhancing software that integrates snapshot management with applications to assure consistent backup images and application-level recovery in minutes.

Doug Rathburn, IT Manager for the town noted that “the Broadleaf team has worked closely with us to understand our goals and design and implement a solution that meets our current needs while allowing for future scalability.”
